University Library sites (Report ID: 1189896017)

I know this is perhaps too specific of a question, but I wondered if there is anything in the works for solving university library search translators. For example, my university at SUNY-Buffalo has always been unable to capture, and I work around with WorldCat. As in for example, http://p8991-bison.buffalo.edu.gate.lib.buffalo.edu/F/418D16596365PE2ISVBSJEIMMFJT8L2H8XVPTN8S7DPM81HVYH-02805?func=full-set-set&set_number=001139&set_entry=000001&format=999. I don't know the generalized technical terms for what SUNY-Buffalo's translator problem falls under, but was wondering whether solves are available or might be worked on in the future.

Thanks!
  • I can have a look, but it'll take some time. Generally, we can't support every library catalog systems, but the ones we do support (such as Aleph in the case of SUNY Buffalo) we try to have working stably (though with Aleph that can be a bit of a challenge.)
  • I figured as much, but just thought I'd ask. Thanks very much for any help (short term or long term).
  • I'm not having any luck using the University of Chicago library site with the standalone. Things are working fine through Amazon (a book icon shows up in the url bar), but not in the library site, lib.uchicago.edu - is this a translator issue, or am I doing something wrong? I don't have any trouble with it when I'm using the Firefox plugin.

    Thanks!
  • You need to be more specific than that - which catalog on that site are you using? The new Lens catalog? That should work.
If not provide a URL for record that fails - they're at the bottom of the item display.
  • Oh, and make sure your version of Zotero standalone is up to date - 3.0.3
  • Yes, I've been using the Lens search. I just updated my standalone version this morning, and made sure I had the Chrome connector. Here are a couple of URLs that don't work for me - I see a folder in the URL bar, but no blue book like usual:

    http://pi.lib.uchicago.edu/1001/cat/bib/5900555
    http://pi.lib.uchicago.edu/1001/cat/bib/4185269

    Thanks for your help,
    Chelsea
  • thanks - I'll take a look later.
  • Hi, just checking in. I went back today to try to add something to freestanding Zotero, using Chrome, and came up with the same problem - nothing showed up in the URL bar to add the book. Is this compatibility coming soon? Here's an example of a link where I didn't see a book icon when I went to the listing:

    http://lens.lib.uchicago.edu/?q=making%20of%20brazil

    Thanks,
    Chelsea
  • this is not a general issue - lens works consistently for me both in Firefox and with Chrome and Standalone, I get icons for all of the links you have provided.

Do other sites work for you? Both generally (amazon.com, NYT etc.) but also specificaly this:
    http://www.husdal.com/2011/06/19/disruptions-in-supply-networks/
    and this:

  • Hi,

I realize compatibility with various University Libraries is patchwork - but any chance of having a site translator for USC's library system?

    Here's an example link:

    https://library.usc.edu/uhtbin/cgisirsi/x/0/0/5?searchdata1=2420992%7BCKEY%7D

I am using the most recent Zotero standalone version and the Safari connector. The icon shows up on University Library item record pages but displays an error message during saving.

Thanks so much for your help!
  • USC works with Zotero for Firefox - so that system (SIRSI elibrary) is generally supported.
Someone else would have to say if this generally doesn't work in Safari or if it's a problem specific to you- the Safari connectors fails more often not just than Zotero for Firefox but also than the Chrome connector.

    Hi,

We’ve also got a problem with our catalog: the book icon doesn’t show up anymore. I think we use the translator Library Catalog (SIRSI).js

    Here’s an example link:

    http://www.cible.ulb.ac.be/uhtbin/cgisirsi/x/S.HUMAINES/0/5?searchdata1=915050{ckey}

    Zotero 3.0.7
    Firefox 13.0.1

Any help would be greatly appreciated !
  • I am also seeing the problem reported above with the icon no longer appearing in an SIRSI catalogue. This occurs with any search on <http://webcat.library.utoronto.ca/>.
  • There might be a problem with Sirsi, yes (but not with Sirsi elibrary such as USC, so that's separate).
  • The Sirsi error - i.e. Toronto and Bruxelles in this thread - is now fixed.
It'll start working in 24hs or you can update translators immediately from the general tab of the Zotero preferences.

I still get an error for search results in Toronto, but that's a different issue and has likely never worked
