Proquest translator errors

The Proquest translator is no longer working for me (through the Columbia U. proxy).

With the FF add-on, I get a "Could not save item" message. With the stand-alone, I see no messages, just an empty gray message box that quickly disappears. I'm using version 3.0.3 in both cases. Other sites seem to work OK.

  • Update: The problem seems to be sporadic. I have no problem with some articles. Other articles work occasionally. And some articles I can't get to work at all.
  • Hey qenghis,
I remember I saw this bug-fix for ProQuest - its sounds like this might be good to solve your issue. Also check out this Improvements to Proquest translator page, maybe you'll find something there.
    Hope this helped! Gaby
  • Thank you, GabyWeiss. That doesn't look like that's the problem, though. There's no "pqdtft" in my urls, and the translator's regex seems to match fine. I suspect that the problem is in the data scraping.

It's odd that no one from Zotero, has replied. Usually, they're pretty responsive.

To the Zotero folks, if you can give me some debugging pointers, I know javascript, and I'd be happy to help debug.
  • confirmed - I'll take a look when I get a chance.
  • Thank you, Adam. Please let me know if I can assist.
  • a fixed version is now up - it will auto-update within 24hs or you can update immediately from the general tab of the zotero preferences.
I tested with the three links above (as well as some others) and this should work now, but any problems please let us know.
  • Great. Thanks so much.

FF works now, but it's still not working for me with Chrome and the standalone. I don't get any error message. The alert box just says "Saving item" and then disappears.
  • works for me on Chrome. Maybe restart Zotero and Chrome?
If you get a chance to try this on campus or via VPN - i.e. w/o the ezproxy I'd be curious if that makes a difference.
  • Ah yes, thanks again. Restarting chrome did it. I'm still not getting the automatic pdf download on chrome, but I think that's a separate issue which is pending in a separate thread.
  • yes, that's a known current limitation.
  • Hi everyone, I'm also having trouble saving from Proquest.
I am on a result page for a advanced search. When I click the Save to Zotero button in the address bar, I see a list of found articles. I select 3 and click save, the a blank zotero saving window appear then after a little while I get the error cannot save item in that same window.

I am using the URL (sorry this is very long)
    http://search.proquest.com.proxy.bib.uottawa.ca/results/1373271B0041CE59845/1/$5bqueryType$3dadvanced:OS$3b+sortType$3drelevance$3b+searchTerms$3d$5b$3cAND$7cpub:Edmonton+Journal$3e,+$3cAND$7ccitationBodyTags:LRT$3e$5d$3b+searchParameters$3d$7bNAVIGATORS$3dsourcetypenav,pubtitlenav,objecttypenav,languagenav$28filter$3d200$2f0$2f*$29,decadenav$28filter$3d110$2f0$2f*,sort$3dname$2fascending$29,yearnav$28filter$3d1100$2f0$2f*,sort$3dname$2fascending$29,yearmonthnav$28filter$3d120$2f0$2f*,sort$3dname$2fascending$29,monthnav$28sort$3dname$2fascending$29,daynav$28sort$3dname$2fascending$29,+RS$3dOP,+chunkSize$3d20,+instance$3dprod.academic,+date$3dRANGE:1989-0-1,1989-11-31,+ftblock$3d34000+1+34001,+removeDuplicates$3dfalse$7d$3b+metaData$3d$7bUsageSearchMode$3dAdvanced,+dbselections$3darts$7cscience$7cliterature$7chealth$7cbusiness$7cUNASSIGNED$7cdissertations$7cnews$7chistory$7csocialsciences,+siteLimiters$3dSourceType,_$25DocumentType,_$25Language$7d$5d?accountid=14701

I had the exact same trouble when trying to save from a Factiva results page yesterday. I wonder if it's specific to my proxy? I will try again when I am on campus inside the library and see if that works...

    Any thoughts?
  • that URL is tied to your session - which database(s), which search terms?
Is this using Firefox or Chrome/Safari?
What happens if you go to the items and try to save the individually.

Unlikely this has anything to do with your proxy, which looks standard.
  • Hi adamsmith and thanks for your help.

    The database: Proquest
The search term: "pub(Edmonton Journal) AND LRT" in the last 12 months

Using Firefox (I switched from Chrome because I had even less success there with Zotero)

I get the same error when I try to import an article after opening it individually (for example: the article titled: "Tax hike possible to 'fast-track' LRT; Public-private partnership for Mill Woods an option" which opens in http://search.proquest.com.proxy.bib.uottawa.ca/docview/922199920/1373298D79155F8E7A2/12?accountid=14701)
  • let's stick with the individual article then (those links I can use).
    That works for me.
Run through 4,5,6,8, and 11 here:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/troubleshooting_translator_issues
Post the Translator used from 6 and the report ID from 11 here.
  • Hi again, here is my troubleshooting log:

4 - done already, running Firefox 13.0 which reports being up to date
5 - Zotero reports it's up to date (mine actually says "À jour" since my UI is in French...)
6 - The tooltip say: "Saveto Zotero (ProQuest)"
8 - None of my installed Firefox extensions are reported as problematic.
Disabling all extensions except for Zotero and restarting Firefox did not fix the issue as I still get the same error message.
    11 - ReportID: 219961129
  • (Dan - what does the error report say?)
  • [JavaScript Error: "No title specified for item" {file: "chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/translation/translate.js" line: 554}]
  • dominicv (or Dan), what version of Zotero are you using? The current version is 3.0.7. Update if it's anything else.
  • dominicv, you wouldn't happen to be using the French interface of ProQuest, would you? I can reproduce the same error if I switch to French. Try using English (there is a selector at the top).

We should probably rethink the ProQuest translator to work with other languages.
  • (@aurimas - any thoughts on how to do that? I remember that Ajlyon used the data on the page bc. it was much bettern than the RIS export. I guess we could have it check and switch to the English version if necessary?).
  • I did something similar for springer link and sudoc translators by essentially building a list of fields in all available languages. It's quite messy.

Perhaps it's better to stick to RIS export (maybe only when we detect non-english interface).

I would prefer BibTeX, but they place a lot of the metadata in the note field and use localized strings there as well. We can probably do some cookie manipulation like in Google Scholar translator to get the english version of BibTeX. This would be similar to what you suggest though, but perhaps faster. I'll need to take a closer look at the translator to figure out if we can use BibTeX only.
  • Hi everyone, you were right my problem stems from using the French UI for the ProQuest database. I was able to succesfully import to Zotero both one article at a time and multiple articles from the Search results page when using the English UI.

One added question as a newby: shouldn't the PDF files of the stories also be imported since I selected that option on the preferences? I'm asking because to my surprise, only the metadata was sent to my Zotero database...

    Once again thanks!
  • I was also getting the same bug but simple changing to English UI the import worked as expected.

I suggest your guys listing this issue in known issues page.
  • @lugusto - good point, done. We're also working on a fix.
  • Found a new issue

I've imported 19 search results at same time. All of them are ok, but I've found on my storage folder some sets not linked to any Zotero registry containing a list of html-related files.

I'm running Portable Firefox 13.0 with Zotero 3.0.7 on Win7 Home Premium. My files folder is set to a custom place outside the profile one.

P:\SkyDrive\(removed due to privacy issues)\storage, on folders names listed at the end of message.

(I've done in total 3 bath import from ProQuest. It seems that each imported work generated an extra folder with HTML stuff)

  • that's where Zotero puts the data for the Snapshots it takes of sites - that's expected behavior.
  • It's safe to delete the folders containing HTML sets and keeping only the ones with PDF files?
  • edited June 10, 2012
it's mostly safe, but inelegant and you'll have links to deleted files in Zotero - I'd recommend that you delete the snapshot in Zotero (attached to each Proquest item) rather than the files in the storage folder.

It's not really recommended that you ever touch the content of your storage folder. It will, e.g., make later troubleshooting much harder. Anything that's in your storage folder you can delete using the Zotero interface if you don't feel you need it.

(edit: after deleting the snapshots in Zotero you'll need to empty the Zotero trash before the files disappear from your HD).
