PDF tab size issue - not downsizing to fit to window

I use the built-in PDF viewer to read and highlight papers. It works great, until I have too many tabs open (on my 13" MBP that's around 18), then the space taken by the tabs no longer shrink as more are added and instead the width of the embedded window expands to accommodate the size of the tabs. This causes the Zotero window to extend "past the screen" and I can no longer see or access the items on the right side, namely the search bar. The PDFs also re-adjust to this imaginary space and are off-center in the real screen. I can adjust the window size of the app itself but the contents always remain out of the viewable area until I either a) close tabs, b) move Zotero to a larger screen, or c) move the app window to the left and then extend the right side of it (so now the left side of the app window is inaccessible).

The tabs shrink until no text is visible, but there is still lots of empty space before the close X button on them. It would be great if this could be fixed.
