U.S.C. whole v. Sections citation

I am facing a little bit of a citation dilemma. I am citing different sections within several titles from the USC, which do not necessarily have an "Act" per se to use into the field: Name of the Act. When it comes to Title 18, I have been using the Sentencing Reform Act of 1984, but I think this is not correct.

I am unsure whether I need to add each section individually to Zotero before I cite to them, in which case, I am missing the name of the act, or is there a way to "master" cite the USC and refer to the pertinent section.

Thank you.
  • Can you give an example of what you want the citations to look like? And what style are you using?
  • Generally, you can see how to enter most legal item types by consulting https://juris-m.github.io/indigobook/
  • Thank you for the link. The examples provided show these examples of a proper citation:
    Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, 21 U.S.C. § 387 (2012).
    Lanham (Trademark) Act, 15 U.S.C. §§ 1051–1141n (2012).
    Communications Act of 1934, 47 U.S.C. § 223 (2012 & Supp. I 2013).
    or
    Stored Communications Act, 18 U.S.C.A. §§ 2701–2711 (West 2000).

Now, when citing 18 USC §1111. The section is titled: Murder. Title 18 is CRIMES AND CRIMINAL PROCEDURE... In trying to use one of the examples above, it appears that I need the name of the Act. However, this is how Westlaw cites it: 18 U.S.C.A. § 1111 (West) without using the name of the Act.

How do I properly input this section's information into Zotero?
  • Hi @bwiernik ... I came across a tool to answer my question, and I wanted to facilitate it for anyone who may need it.

The specific name of an Act under the USC can be found here: https://uscode.house.gov/popularnames/popularnames.htm#.xhtml
