pdf import not working (ACS publications)

Hi,

the pdf import does not work at the moment for ACS publications. It only imports metadata. It does not matter whether it is imported from the browser (firefox 67.0.3 64bit) or by searching for the DOI in Zotero (5.0.67). Manual pdf download was fine.
ACS revamped their website recently, so this might cause issues.
Two publications were affected:
https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsnano.9b03157
https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.chemmater.9b00574

This was on a windows 10 machine.
Thank you for your help!
  • I'm having this same problem. There are two other discussions on the forum pertaining to this issue (see links below). One of these was originally posted more than 20 days ago. Is there no resolution for this problem yet?

  • We're aware, but no, no solution yet.
  • This is now fixed — thanks for reporting. Your Zotero Connector should auto-update within 24 hours, or you can update manually by clicking Update Translators in the Advanced pane of the Zotero Connector preferences.

However, I am not sure whether there exists still different PDF versions. We had some previous code for high resolution PDF and PDF with links (PDF Plus). Are there still different PDF versions existing? Or is this code now maybe not needed anymore?

Moreover, I have not yet looked closer at the supplementary files possibly saved.
  • Unfortunately, there still seems to be a problem. The URL below, for example, will only save metadata when I use the Zotero connector, and does not download the underlying PDF (which I have institutional access to). I'm using Zotero 5.0.68, with Chrome 75.0.3770.100 on a MacBook Pro running 10.13.3, and this worked fine until recently. Thanks!

  • Forgot to note - this same problem seems to exist for all the ACS journals, regardless of whether it's an ASAP paper or one from the back-issue files. I've experimented with several titles, and it's consistent (which I hope means that there's a single fix possible!)
  • Works for me -- the fact that you're still on Zotero 5.0.68 suggests something may be interfering with your updates? Start by updating to 5.0.71 and see if that fixes it.
  • Unfortunately, I've just updated to 5.0.71, checked for updated translators, restarted Zotero, and I'm still getting the same problem on every ACS journal link. I was hoping that would fix the problem, but apparently not. . .
  • We'd want a debug ID from _both_ the Zotero connector _and_ Zotero (so two debug IDs for the same operation) for trying to import from the above URL

  • Just did so - here are the debug IDs for Zotero and the connector, when trying to save a current JACS link. Thanks!

@dstillman What is in these debug logs? Anything to see where the problem might be?
  • OK, I don't know what's happening on the Zotero end, but out of curiosity I hit the update-translator button again and tried another ACS article (Journal of Medicinal Chemistry) and the JACS one that I've been using as a test case. And both downloaded the attached PDF! So, good news.
  • No change on Zotero -- I'm guessing that the updated translators had just not loaded into the connector on your end. Let use know if this isn't working anywhere else, but unless we hear back we consider this fixed.
