Zotero not importing author names correctly

Zotero saves the author names of AGU journals as single field entries rather than two fields entries, when I click the "save to zotero" button in firefox.

For example, for this paper (https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/2017MS001188), since the authors' first, last, and middle names are all put in single field entries, the output looks like the following when inserted it in a paper.

(Kooperman Gabriel J. et al., 2018)
Kooperman Gabriel J., Pritchard Michael S., O’Brien Travis A., & Timmermans Ben W. (2018). Rainfall From Resolved Rather Than Parameterized Processes Better Represents the Present‐Day and Climate Change Response of Moderate Rates in the Community Atmosphere Model. Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 0(0). https://doi.org/10.1002/2017MS001188

However, the correct one should look like this:

(Kooperman et al., 2018)
Kooperman, G. J., Eldred, M. S., O’Brien, T. A., & Timmermans, B. W.

Is there a way to let zotero know such author names should be two fields instead of one field? Thanks.
  • This is a known and vexing problem. See:

    and other threads:

Until this is fixed I recommend: 1) use the doi translator; 2) add the hyphen to the ISSN; and 3) copy/paste the abstract from the webpage into Zotero. After a few times you will learn to accomplish these tasks quite quickly.

Not only is Wiley not properly handling author names but they are also not using the proper character encoding for hyphens, dashes, apostrophes, and some other characters in their abstract metadata. This results in funny characters or question marks in the abstracts. When I copy the abstract from the webpage to my Zotero record, the punctuation is transferred correctly.
  • Thanks, DWL-SDCA.

Can you provide some information about how to switch to the doi translator? I see "save to zotero (Atypon Journals)" when leaving the mouse at the zotero button. I guess you meant that it can be changed.
  • Perhaps, you meant to use the "Add Item by Identifiers" option. I tried. It works fine. I will use it before there is a fix.
  • You can do the same by using right-click on the Save to Zotero icon in your browser--> Save to Zotero --> Save to Zotero (DOI)
