Cannot Extract Annotations - option is not in drop-down menu

Hi all, the extract annotations feature is such an attractive one but I can't use it at the moment. I'm a new Zotero user. I've renamed the pdf from the metadata, opened it in Preview for Mac, made some highlights, but back in Zotero there's no option to extract annotations.
I'm using Zotero 5.0.20
MacOS Sierra 10.12.6
Can anyone help?
