cannot import tags from ris

cannot import tags from ris, and cannot import the txt file exported from refworks correctly.
  • You'll need to provide an example entry that fails. (RIS files are just text files that you can open up to narrow down the problem.)

this is what i exported from refworks, the problem is that abstract will be imported into notes, and keyword cannot be imported at all. i think it is because of the abbreviations such as TY, ID; the ris file i exported from zotero use N2 for abstract, but refworks use AB, if i change AB to be N2 manually, it can be imported correctly. but for keywords or tags, they both use KW.

another question: could .ovd file be imported?

  • RefWorks is wrong according to the RIS spec, which says (inexplicably, to be fair) that AB is a note and N2 is an abstract. But it's probably worth checking whether EndNote, other bibliographic programs, and RIS-generating websites ever actually use AB for a note rather than an abstract, since if they don't we could probably change the RIS translator to import AB as an abstract.

The keywords are importing fine for me. You might want to run Reset Translators and Styles from the Advanced pane of the Zotero prefs to make sure you have the latest RIS translator available for 1.0.7. (A new version will be available with 1.0.8, but the previous version should work.)
  • Hi, I have just imported a 10,000 reference Endnote database into Zotero and played around with all sorts of 'RIS Tag : Zotero Field' combinations. In the end I avoided the use of the KW tag. My Endnote export style looks like this...

Although my abstract goes to notes I find this better as lengthy abstracts do not chew up screen space available to show the essential reference fields in Zotero. I used the abstract field to store the location I store the physical copy of the reference and its accession code.

Keywords are stored as a list in the notes section. I did not find the global import of 1000 of keywords into the tags section really worked how I liked. As a note, I can still find my references easily using the search function. To date, I have not started Tagging References, but have found the ability to group like references into collections very useful.

You can shrink the Abstract field to one line by clicking on the label.
