  • Okay, so I should...uninstall and then reinstall Standalone?
    Yes
  • Okay, I did that.

I opened it in Firefox. Still can't see the notes.

I opened it in the Standalone version...still can't see the notes.

I'm going to restart my computer, I did restart Firefox already.

Damn, I feel like we're closer, but still can't figure it out. Hmm.
  • (Aurimas: Nicely done.)

The fact that this is happening in both Standalone and Firefox would seem to point to a system issue — say, a problem with your system fonts. But the note font is the same as the font used in the rest of the Zotero UI, so I'm not sure why just the notes would be affected

You might as well check the "Note font size" pref in the General pane of the Zotero preferences to make sure it's not set to 0 or something, but you would've had to change that separately in both Standalone and Firefox, and the same goes for any other hidden styling settings that might affect this.

Also, it shouldn't matter, but did you change the main Zotero font size in Standalone as well? In your screenshot from Firefox you have it set to a larger size. Does changing it back to "Small" and restarting Firefox make any difference?

Can you see a cursor when you type, even if you can't see the text?

Also, I don't think you answered whether there's a blue highlight when you press Cmd-A.
  • OHMYGOD!

That was it! I never manually did it...but the font was set to 0! I changed it to 12 in both Standalone and via Mozilla and...I CAN SEE THE NOTES!

Wow, talk about great news on a Friday evening.

I'm sorry for being such a major PITA. I really, really appreciate you help, assistance, time and smarts!

Thank you two! This is awesome! Really, really really thrilled.

I do use two monitors...my laptop, then an external monitor. I wonder if that somehow made things weird?

Not sure, but I can see my notes again.

    Thank you!! This is great.

I doubt this was set through the UI, but why do we even have the option to set the font size that low? I think anything below 4pt is not practical anyway.
  • I have no idea how this would've happened in both programs, but I'm glad it's resolved. In any case, I've added a minimum font size of 6px for the next release, so this shouldn't happen again.
  • I've been steadily working away since you two sorted this out, thus my disappearance.

But, I wanted to make sure and thank you very, very much for all of your time and efforts. This was extremely helpful!

Thank you, I really appreciate it.

  • I also had invisible notes which could nevertheless be successfully copied, but with a different (related) cause.

As Dan said, it's a font problem, but in my case this was because of some recently installed system fonts which Firefox could not recognise. Uninstalling the faulty fonts solved the problem. A distinctive symptom was that the text on various webpages appeared garbled in Firefox, but became legible when I disabled "let websites choose their own font" (see https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/673003). After uninstalling the faulty fonts, those pages were legible even with that setting enabled and my Zotero notes became visible again.

I mention this in case it helps anyone else.
