plugin for Seamonkey

Hi,

I am thinking to switch to Seamonkey web browser. One of the most
important things to consider (if not the most important one) is
the compatibility of Zotero plugin with Seamonkey. I saw in internet
that back to 2010 there were some attempts to write a plugin of
Zotero for Seamonkey.

I don't know the status of the plugin. Is there some plugin stable
for Seamonkey currently?

Thanks.
  • not that I know of, but have you tried installing Zotero? Might just work.
  • Hi,

I have installed and used the standalone version of Zotero
and currently I am using the plugin (extension) for Google
    Chrome.

Do you mean I could install the plugin for Firefox in Seamonkey?
or what installation are you referring to?

    Thanks for your answer.
  • Do you mean I could install the plugin for Firefox in Seamonkey?
Yes, that's certainly worth a try - the browser runs on the same technology.
  • I gave this a go with MLZ (I assume that you would get the same result with Zotero main, although you'd want to check to be sure).

To get the addon to install, you need to add a spec to the install.rdf in the XPI source, and rebuild. Once that's done, it does install. MLZ shows up in the list of installed addons, and clicking the Preferences button in MLZ entry in the Seamonkey addons listing does bring up with MLZ preferences popup, so the application is running okay.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any means of calling up the database UI (i.e. Zotero/MLZ itself). The hotkeys don't work (you might have better luck in Zotero main there), and the "Load Zotero in:" line is missing from the top of general preferences. That likely means that one or more of the overlays use to shoehorn Z into the browser UI is failing.

So it looks like the internals might run okay, but some work would be needed to hook up the user interface.
  • Should be sufficient to just tweak some overlay targets https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Add-ons/SeaMonkey_2 (especially browser.xul)
  • or if you don't want to tweak you could
    1. Follow fbennett's solution and use Zotero for Seamonkey as a connector for Zotero Standalone - assuming (and I think that's not unlikely) that the URL bar icon shows up or
    2. As a more minimal solution still, don't install Zotero in Seamonkey, but use the bookmarklet with Zotero STandalone. That should work decently well: https://www.zotero.org/downloadbookmarklet
  • Tried the integration plugin for LibreOffice. It will install with a tweak to install.rdf, but will not communicate with MLZ running in Seamonkey. So adamsmith's options (1) and (2) above look to be the final word for the present.
  • fbennett, not sure about LO, but probably related to a similar issue with Word: https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/32334/word-2010-cant-find-zotero-4012-for-firefox-in-palemoon-2402x64/#Item_6 (for Word, I would try adding "SeaMonkey" to that list)
  • Can't see anything similar in LO. The LO macros call some UNO code, maybe it's over there. But this is starting to look like real work. :)
