Citations one pesky document and one Video entry

  • When I deleted the line <macro name="pages">

    I got this in the pane below. I did nothing else.

    I went to Preferences and chose Harvard - West of England (Bristol)
    I then tried two new citations and the result remains the same.

    (Henn et al., 2009, p. 31)
    (Conway, 1987, p. 55)

    Is there something else I should be doing?

    The new style with (:) works for all my other chapters so far except the first chapter.

    Among the list of styles only Harvard-West of England (Bristol) is listed. There is no way to see whether this is the normal Harvard-West of England (Bristol) or the Harvard-West of England LJ modification I made.

    Should there be two Harvard-West of England (Bristol) styles listed or did the modification I made override the original one?

    If you used
    <title>Harvard Style LJ Modified1 </title>
    <id>http://www.zotero.org/styles/harvard-LJ-modified-1</id>

    then "Harvard Style LJ Modified1" should show up in the list of styles.

    As for the macro - you can't delete the macro. It's used in the bibliography. As I wrote:

    You should I should do the following:

    then they're in the macro "pages"
    <macro name="pages"> --FOUND
    find the line containing <label variable... in that and delete it. --- DELETED

    Then find the line you have above:
    <text variable="issue" prefix=" (" suffix="), "/> See note below as there was no ,
    and remove the , " in the suffix.

    Note: This is what is on the system...
    <text variable="issue" prefix=" (" suffix=")"/>
    As you can see, there is no ,

    Finally, add prefix=": " to the <text macro="pages"/> line a little below that.
    I have found the line. Now, where about on the line do you want me to place ":"? Everywhere I placed ":" was rejected by your system with the following error message.
    "Error parsing style:
    Error: Fils is not valid XML"
    I have no right to be playing with code.

    Higher up, I do see the following....

    </macro>
    <macro name="pages">
    <group prefix="pp. ">
    <text variable="page"/>
    </group>
    </macro>

    I just assume at some stage I would need to delete pp and wonder if this is the place. Just asking.
  • Sorry, Adam, but there is such style listed anywhere.
    The strange thing is the change has been incorporated into the standard Harvard - West of England (Bristol) style for all the chapters except the first chapter.

    The link <id>http://www.zotero.org/styles/harvard-LJ-modified-1</id>;
    does not exist.

    Was I supposed to type:
    <id>http://www.zotero.org/styles/harvard-LJ-modified-1</id>; into the code?

    I thought I only had to type the first line

    <title>Harvard Style LJ Modified1 </title>
  • Sorry, this is getting too much. I can give you pointers when you're stuck, but I can't walk you through every step.

    You can try working with the visual editor if you find that easier:
    http://editor.citationstyles.org/visualEditor/
    which may help you pinpoint where a given element in a citation comes from

    you can start with your current code by copy and pasting it into the "Code Editor" and then switch to the visual editor.
  • I've done it! It's beautiful - on the screen in Visual Editor.
    THANK YOU.
    Now, how do I get it out of Visual Editor into my system with a NEW name? I can't seem to see how to do that.
  • Click on "Info" on the left and change the Title. Just the title, the editor takes care of the rest.
    Then click on "Style" a little above that and on "Save Style" OK all messages and follow the instructions.
  • Nearly there. As soon as I've made these final changes I will be happy to save it.

    I have found how to add : immediately after the year but how do I get Zotero to allow page numbers to be entered afterwards but only where stipulated?
    I entered a "Number Node" under “Conditional” called Else and under that I entered AA number (term). IS THIS correct for what I want to do.
    E.g. this is what I want to create.
    (Accadia et al., 2012: 23)
    (McInnis & Nelson, 2011: 23)

    This is what I have done. Will it work?

    I am a bit concerned that a message says that I have just edited a macro which is used in multiple places. I only made a change to the citations. I don’t want to touch the bibliography.

    This has been too stressful for me.
  • Oh my GOSH! Oh MY GOSH!

    It worked! It looks absolutely fantastic! Both the citations and the bibliography. CSL Editor made all the difference for me.
    I'm absolutely delighted.

    THANK YOU for your patience. I really appreciate it. Don't envy your job having to deal with utter beginners who have never even seen code much less manipulate it.

    Love Zotero.
    .....

    Wonder if code could help me collect hundreds of essays from around the world through a website and allow judges to submit their responses through same website so recipients will be able to search for their name to see their results? Wonder how much I would have to pay to get that done?
