Zotero cooperative structure idea & suggestion (auto-compression for PDFs)

Hi,

I haven't heard feedback on this forum post request for help (https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/134304/storage-level-error-report-id-921097983#latest). It may be less of a Q now, as I once again tried to purge some storage, but I would like to know if there are any options paying members of Zotero have for more immediate support?

I could understand limited capacity, but that would make me wonder if Zotero could use some more staff or something, as it seems direct support would be a fair benefit for folks who pay, even if that meant a special tag that can be added for forum posts. In that direction of revenue and structure, maybe Zotero should consider a cooperative ownership model, where a minimum annual payment makes you a member-owner, with options to vote on Board member reps, as well as on ideas for new features for Zotero, and other member benefits (eg, all members could receive the minimum storage level). There are some interesting models out there, but they generally fit under cooperative legal structures (some of which are non-profits) and framings like "platform cooperativism," as shown here: https://platform.coop/ There are some useful basic explanations there and in resources like this: https://communityrule.info/templates/elected-board.html This could have potential to bring in some added revenue, even if it meant charging everyone who uses Zotero a minimum amount, like $10/year (though I'd also suggest actual voting member-owners would have a higher payment, like the amount currently charged for the minimum storage level). I've worked in cooperative development on and off over the years, so glad to share more if there was some interest (also hope people comment if interested!).

I also wanted to suggest a specific feature, unless I'm missing it, that Zotero build in an auto-compression setting option, where files can be compressed into smaller versions (eg, like offered for free on this site: https://www.ilovepdf.com/compress_pdf). I imagine it shouldn't be too complicated of technology if they offer it for free, and PDFs continue to be able to be annotated in Zotero after I've done it.

Many of us are students and don't have funds for the most expensive storage options w/Zotero, and this feels like it would be a fair option. Please also let me know if there are places where suggestions are shared, though it seems like it could be handy to have a dedicated space for that, where ideas can be voted up, commented on, etc. (which I kind of got at above in ways).

Thanks,

Brendan
  • Paying for storage doesn't affect support — everyone gets the same (very high level of) support directly from Zotero developers and has the same level of input into product decisions. The entire Zotero team was just at an annual meet-up last week and wasn't as available as usual.
