Citing multivolume books with distinct volume titles

Hello everyone,

I have a question about citing multivolume books where each volume has its own individual title, following Chicago Manual of Style.

For example, Donald F. Lach’s multivolume work is titled "Asia in the Making of Europe." Volume 2 of this work has its own title: "A Century of Wonder." In Chicago style, the citation would look like this:

Donald F. Lach, Asia in the Making of Europe, vol. 2, A Century of Wonder (University of Chicago Press, 1977), 351.

At the moment, I’m not sure how to model this cleanly in Zotero. I tried putting the overall book title in the Series field and the individual volume title in the Title field, but this doesn’t work well, since Zotero does not italicize the series title—whereas Chicago style treats both titles as italicized.

Is there a recommended way to handle this case in Zotero? Or would it be possible to add a dedicated “Volume title” field to better support multivolume works like this?
Thanks very much for your help, and for all the work you do on Zotero.
  • You can add volume and part titles using the Extra field; hopefully they will be available as independent fields before too much longer. Here is an example showing how to enter the Lach example from the Chicago Manual of Style, sec. 14.23:

  • Perfect, thank you so much dunning! I'll follow this fix until the happy day when we see fields dedicated to volume and part titles. Thank you again for maintaining the most wonderful software in the history of humankind.
