Weird capitalization behavior after single quotation marks with Chicago Manual of Style 18th edition
Zotero usually does a great job converting all kinds of quotation marks in titles into the proper (single or double) marks depending on the style and entry type used. But I found one really odd behavior with single straight marks.
Consider the following examples for a book title, with Chicago 18th author date selected in the preferences.
Title field in Zotero: Word word word word
Chicago generated bibliography entry: Word Word Word Word
> works as expected, all words capitalized
Title field in Zotero: Word "word" word word
Chicago generated bibliography entry: Word “Word” Word Word.
> works as expected: second word enclosed in double straight quotes is capitalized and enclosed in curly double quotes
Title field in Zotero: Word 'word' word word
Chicago generated bibliography entry: Word “word” Word Word.
> doesn't work as expected: second word enclosed in single straight quotes is correctly enclosed in curly double quotes, however it is not capitalized
It gets even more bizarre:
Title field in Zotero: Word 'word' 'word' word
Chicago generated bibliography entry: Word “Word” “word” Word.
> doesn't work as expected: second word enclosed in single straight quotes is correctly capitalized and enclosed in curly double quotes, however the third word enclosed in the same single straight quotes is not capitalized
And, to add to my confusion:
Title field in Zotero: Word 'word' word 'word'
Chicago generated bibliography entry: Word “word” Word “Word”.
> doesn't work as expected: when there is another word between the two words enclosed in single quotes then the one not being capitalized is again the first instance (the second word) in this case.
When the Zotero field already uses curly quotes, irrespective if single or double, it works fine (as long as they're used consistently and not mixed with straight quotes).
Any idea what's going on?
