Yes, it seems as if Zotero is following the MHRA rules, but the rules don't work quite right. As above, there I've realized there are at least three historical figures - van Riebeeck and two van der Stels. But adding quotes in Zotero seems a good solution. Let me try that.

Another odd problem with surnames, this time van der Stel. Always referred to as van der Stel, not der Stel or Stel. Putting the quotes around the surname, i.e. "van der Stel" seems to work for sorting the references, i.e. it produces van der Stel, Simon. But in title of the work I'm citing is Simon van der Stel's journey to Namaqualand in 1685. For some reason when I try to generate a bibliography entry for this work, der Stel in the title comes out as Der Stel. I can't quite figure out why / how to turn this off.
