Is there a way to "un-omit" author?

I have encountered a problem while writing my thesis. I'm using Chicago 17, author-date style and have been omitting authors name if it has already been mentioned in the sentence.

However, my supervisor has decided that it is unacceptable, and that I should change it back to full reference everywhere. Furthermore, he has instructed me to use "ibid." for consecutive citations of the same work, instead of just year and/or page number. For instance, my existing paragraph looks something like this:

"According to Smith (1999, 69) text text. He also thinks that text text (77) and text text (84). In a different study (2000) he points out that text text (133)."

Which is in line with Chicago manual of style. However, my supervisor wants me to change it to:

"Smith thinks that text text (Smith, 1999: 69). He also thinks that text text (ibid.: 77) and text text (ibid.:84). In a different study (Smith, 2000) he points out that text text (ibid.: 133)."

Please tell me there is a way to automate this, because I don't want to spend next 2-3 weeks changing all citations manually. I don't care even if it resets all citations and removes every prefix and suffix.
  • What an unnecessary waste of time. I'm sorry you have to deal with that.
I'm afraid I don't see any way to automate that change. You have to change the sentence structure (as in your first example) and then undo omit author (which you can do using edit citation, but not in bulk). The ibid can in theory be automated, but I am guessing you didn't enter the just page numbers with Zotero
  • I understand. However, I did enter page numbers with Zotero, I mean, I can click "Refresh" in Word plugin without fear of losing anything, and all my citations update. There are no custom modifications - I did everything through edit citation, like add prefix "cf." or suffix "ff".

Previously I have modified Chicago 17 style to not include year in consecutive citations, and when I change it back to unmodified style, it adds the year. However, I need "ibid." and colon. In my example, when I change back the style, it changes it to:

"According to Smith (1999, 69) text text. He also thinks that text text (1999, 77) and text text (1999, 84). In a different study (2000) he points out that text text (2000, 133)."

My supervisor wants me to "un-omit" first entry, and write every subsequent with ibid. and colon, or just ibid. if it is the same page number.
  • Ah OK, you can then modify the style to add ibid -- shouldn't be hard based on your previous modifications but feel free to ask for details. No way to un-omit authors in bulk though
  • Any help would be appreciated! I had modified the style previously through instructions on the forum as well. Don't know what to change or on which line.
  • You'll need to learn a bit how this works. We have the note style with ibid. which you can use as a template: https://www.zotero.org/styles?q=id:chicago-fullnote-bibliography-with-ibid
(you'll need to change things within the section that start with "<citation..."
  • In case it saves you time, there is a page on the Chicago website specifically telling writers not to use Ibid. with the author-date system:
