Are you using ZotFile or anything else to create links? By default, Zotero would attach (not link) files.

ZotFile is a Firefox (and Zotero Standalone) extension, not a Word plugin. If you want to use it in Standalone, you need to install it via the Add-ons pane in Standalone.

The error could possibly be caused by Zotfile trying to rename and move attachments to the external hard drive when it is not connected.

No, that wouldn't happen unless you're using linked attachments (or, say, the ZotFile extension, which can automatically turn stored attachments into linked attachments).

It's on an external hard drive. Zotfile renamed the drive and altered the path such that attachments cannot be found on the old path.

Note this isn't a ZotFile issue -- ZotFile doesn't affect how links are opened, just where linked files are moved to.
