There is styles that have no language set and you can then choose the language within Word/LibreOffice under Document Preferences. (see: https://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_usage)

Yes, a version from the App Store would be sandboxed, so that folder wouldn't be there. We've only tested Zotero with the version from libreoffice.org.

Are you sure? You need to open Finder and press Command-Shift-G, then enter ~/Library/Application Support/LibreOffice/4 into the prompt box.

If a manual installation fails, you'd have to get LibreOffice support. The .oxt is just a standard LO extension. Generally the first thing to try is closing LO and moving the entire LO profile folder
