I tried that -- still tries to load (red bar stays forever) and then after about a minute it says "Zotero experienced an error updating your document." Sigh.

Yes, I tried restarting the computer and no luck. OK so I went to setting preferences and it IS set to false. Could that be the issue? Should I change that to true?
