The good news is that the parent style "American Phytopathological Society" seems to be working well. I switched to that one, and the citations ordered themselves alphabetically and the extraneous periods in the references disappeared!

I also tried a third route: 3. Used word to save the code as a txt file (vs. the rtf file generated by text editor), changed the extension to .csl from .txt, and tried both routes. Similar to option 2, nothing happened at all.
