• Ah, turns out it was a track changes issue w/ Word. When I accepted all changes, then footnotes renumbered themselves correctly. Problem solved.

• Must be a problem with Word then. I delete the footnote number in the document, but the other footnotes are NOT updating accordingly. Oh dear. I guess I'll poke around Word's help/support.

• I think the deleted references are completely deleted. I don't see any evidence of blank fields. BTW, I didn't see the toggle field codes option, even for the references/fields that are present. Where do I find the context menu? I didn't see it by c…

• I'm using fields. Pasting into a new document doesn't seem to fix the issue. How can I be sure that I've completely deleted the citations?
