Bruce: the dichotomy may well be false, but it is nevertheless enacted in the practice of an awful lot of software development. And *I'm* not calling data modelling 'esoteric'; it (or rather its lack) is one big part of why I'd never use Onenote, fo…

Bionatsci: I have been under-using tags as my library is clogged with useless imported tags - I guess I need to dive into my SQLite database and start tagging again from scratch Do you realise you can turn off seeing imported tags in the tag sele…

Two problems with tags for this: They're not granular enough when you have specific dependencies between individual items you want to read. From a human factors point of view, they're not as natural a metaphor for 'order' as, well, real order I en…

Grant: in general I agree with you. I'd like to see Zotero make it easier to work with other apps rather than have efforts diluted on developing a grab bag of features. Hyperlinks (in all directions) are a special case, though, and I think for prin…

There isn't really anything at the moment. There is the 'related' thing (relation?). It's a bit clunky for my purposes, but you might want to explore it if you haven't already. I've asked for something similar (http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/6…

Thanks for the pointer Dan.

Is there a way in 2.0b4 to get a pdf recognised as a pdf, short of opening in a browser plugin (which I don't use)? Drag and drop or 'store copy of file' both result in unindexed, apparently typeless, items.

Adobe acrobat is just horrible ...

catalintucureanu: thanks for the pointing that thread out. The workaround won't work for me as I prefer to have pdfs open in an external reader so don't have any way of opening them in FF. But it's clearly a bug, anyway, so I'd imagine we can expect…

Yes, that's odd. It's happening to me too. Newly-added PDFs also aren't being indexed.

Apparently something like this is on the radar, if not yet the roadmap.

Any chance these kind of spam posts could be removed altogether, to discourage further such?

Although it sticks in the craw to commend something in a Microsoft product, Onenote is great in this regard. It quickly and simply provide hyperlinks to documents (pages) or individual paragraphs or items on a page. Unfortunately it also determined…

Thanks also for all your hard work.

noksagt: 'frustration' might be overstating it. I'm well aware that the feature has never been promised and may not be important to others. I just haven't myself been able to imagine making significant use of non-paper notes without hyperlinks for a…

Yep, fixed for me too.

After -- I just tried again about 2 mins ago.

Having just paid my piddling bill for last month, I'm quite happy.

I did use mydisk.se, and, yes, sadly, they're blocking zotero for free users now. I wasn't able to find a similar free provider. I know it isn't free, but jungledisk is extremely cheap, especially if you use their Rackspace provider.

Ben, email me at bibtoolzotero@mailinator.com and I'll send you a copy.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've stashed them away to have a proper look at when I have a moment.

I may have a look at zotfile when I have time, so thanks for the pointer. But ideally, automatic pdf downloads would just work.
-
Thanks for the offer. I've pasted below some links I've posted recently (with proxy removed) that didn't grab the pdfs for me (also will forward by email to you). With sites that don't need a proxy, all's OK. http://csaweb113v.csa.com/ids70/view_r…

Having spent a little while using a cut-back version of my old library for a recent project, I think a robust way of subsetting a library would be very useful, particularly for those of us who use relatively slow computers (there are many of these l…

djq: I used Dropbox for this for some time, and it worked well. I only put the zotero storage folder in Dropbox, and relied on Zotero syncing for the next. I never ran into any problems with this configuration. Nevertheless, with future developmen…

noksagt: currently I save/name myself, then add to items in zotero (ie. not as links), then delete the original. I would rather have automatic download working, but it's a very minor problem. I do always use a proxy, and guess that must be the prob…

#1: I used to find this a problem, and posted about it early on. But I'm reconciled to zotero's placement now as (a) desktop search finds them for me for any other purpose and (b) if I ever move away from zotero it will be easy enough to do a quick …

scot: exactly, that's the reason that got me using bibtool in the first place. 'Extras' and having the month in the date drove me nuts. I couldn't find a way to turn them off in BibTeX, and I didn't want to delete data just for display purposes. Ac…

Thanks for the info James. I was about to suggest that you were brave to take on a whole thesis in Word, but then of course, it is the tool most people use to create large docs, and us non-Word-users are the distinct minority.
