It's a kludge, but you may be able to force the sort order by entering the name as "Al-Khatib" (with the quotes). Failing that, editing at the last stage sounds like a sensible move.

Oops, sorry, I misspoke. The fix can be tested in both MLZ and Zotero, and when eventually complete, it will filter through to mainstream Zotero in the normal course of events.
