If you just did this, you may be able to restore from the last automatic backup. You'd want to drag all the items into a temporary collection, sync (at which point the tag might be removed), and then reassign the items to the tag.

They're trimmed — it's just a visual bug in the text field. You can see that the item isn't actually saved with the whitespace, and if you click away and back it's gone. But we'll fix the text field — thanks.
