I'm not really sure what you mean. There's already an option in the General pane of the Zotero settings to not download files when saving items. If you're on a webpage and you want to view a PDF, you can just view it in your browser.

Right, but to be clear, you weren't actually getting the parent item — you were getting the child item. The parent item is gray, which mean it's not actually a match.

Make sure you're not confusing gray context rows and actual search matches. If you don't think you are, can you provide a screenshot that shows the item row and item pane for a match in All Fields & Tags, as well as a Debug ID for the search?
