You can follow the manual installation instructions, but this would be due to something on your computer — security software or folder permissions — preventing Zotero from updating the plugin. I'm afraid that's all we can tell you.

You should almost never edit citations in the document. Customize the citation and use Omit Author. See "Narrative Citations with Omit Author” there.

It literally tells you the path of the folder it will delete. If you put anything else in that folder, obviously it would be deleted. Again, you should not touch options that say they're for advanced users if you're not an advanced user.

Resetting your styles above would've gotten rid of it, but resetting these prefs removed the invalid locale setting that was breaking things.

OK, I believe you had an invalid value in your custom style, and that broke things, including for other styles. We'll add some better error handling.
