Hi Dan I have tried both disabling the auto sync and changing ordering by title. Still extremely slow and Mozilla is locked (cannot launch) meanwhile. Mozilla only launches after Standalone finishes loading...

One extra note: while Zotero standalone is loading (not responding) Mozilla is also not responding. I cannot even launch it.

Thank you Dan. Yes, I tried both. Stopping the anti-virus and adding Zotero as an exception to the Windows firewall helped. But going back to windows before the August 7 update and re-installing Zotero 3 stand-alone apparently solved it.
