  • I am having trouble understanding why professional educators and their students would ever need to use ERIC's apparently buggy RIS export, at least not while using Zotero. The whole point of using Zotero is to avoid the crude and often hard to under…
  • I've posted a crude screencast of Zotero-style ERIC usage on Vimeo -- it's queued, but should be available at http://vimeo.com/14401996 in an hour or so.
  • Having watched the screencast you sent me, I'm sure now that the issue is that you aren't quite understanding how Zotero works with the web. You should review http://www.zotero.org/support/screencast_tutorials/intro and other basic Zotero intro mate…
  • Is there an icon in the address bar? If so, you will need to click on it when you are on a page that has information you would like to save to your Zotero library. Yes, this is not completely the same as the ERIC designers had in mind, but it is con…
  • No! You don't need to import RIS files. Not at all. Just view the clipboard, and click the icon in the address bar. Same thing with your folders. View the folder and click in the address bar. That said, you can email me the video at ajlyon@gmail.co…
  • I did just come across a small bug in my translator code which prevented it from translating some, generally older, single article pages. This shouldn't be related to the issue you are seeing. It has been fixed at the link above.
  • Aha! Yes, the word "clipboard" appears, but that's not the updated translator. For some reason, you are not succeeding in installing the translator. In a text editor like Notepad or TextEdit, open the ERIC.js translator that is in the translators d…
  • But note http://www.zotero.org/support/development_roadmap -- perhaps we are waiting for the recommendation engine? That could be interesting, but pushing it to 2.2 wouldn't be the end of the world.
  • By the way, is there an ETA on 2.1? It was originally planned for March, and if there is no further bug fixes on the current version, we would like to plan accordingly. I (not a Zotero team member) don't know of any new features that are necessarily…
  • Ben, Keep in mind that in fact almost no commercial publishers have actively made their sites work with Zotero. WilsonWeb just submitted a translator 1-2 weeks ago-- and they are the first such submission I know of. The fact that many other sites …
  • Thanks for posting that email. I'm glad to know that they at least tried to provide some warning. It looks like I started working on a new version of the translator two weeks ago. I'll get back to it when I can; I don't remember why it wasn't worki…
  • Frank's question about the test case is to make sure that this isn't still a problem in the new, upcoming Zotero 2.1. Unfortunately, it won't fix your problem. If you are in a real bind, you can follow my instructions above to do this using the dev…
  • I won't look into this immediately, but please provide a URL for a search that doesn't work as you expect. I'll try to take a look in the coming week or two. Also, an Encore translator will eventually happen. I have a partly working version that I …
  • You can delete the things on your desktop once you have decided that everything made the transition intact. You're better off not deleting things from within the Zotero data directory unless you have a concrete reason for doing so.
  • Apparently publishers like to change their sites right as the academic year starts. I will not be working on this today or even tomorrow, but I'll try to take a look in the next week or so. The help of other interested developers would be, of cours…
  • You should be using "Item Type". Type is for some other things, like Website Type.
  • I've done this logged in and not, with saved items and with "clipboard" items. The translator works for me. I still wonder if perhaps you aren't getting the newest version of the ERIC translator. Can you take a look a the translator source, located…
  • To be clear, I added code that makes saving work from folder and clipboard pages, at least for me.
  • If you're not seeing the icon, then there's something wrong with your installation or something specific to the way that you are connecting to ERIC. Are you perhaps using a proxy? What is the URL in the address bar when you are viewing your clipboar…
  • And you re-downloaded the translator from the address above? And reloaded the pages?
  • I've added support for saving from folder and clipboard pages. Just click the folder icon in the address bar while viewing a clipboard or folder, then select the items you'd like to save. I have not looked into the RIS issue, but this should obviat…
  • Such a feature would probably take a lot of additional work, since the actual page structure of Gmail is completely different from Google Scholar, even if the email looks like Google Scholar.
  • In that case, there's not much I can do. When one of the core Zotero devs looks at your error report, perhaps they can provide some insight. Can you generate and submit debug output as well? If Amazon is throwing an error, it will be in the debug ou…
  • You need to click on the record that you want to keep, then click next in the bottom right corner of the window. If you have a small screen, you may have to resize things to see the "Next" button.
  • Hmm. That one works for me. Try restarting Firefox or your computer and try again -- this might be an intermittent glitch. Alternatively, the open access roots of Zotero are rebelling against books with a list price of over $0.63 per page.
  • It's not June, but: Please go to http://github.com/ajlyon/zotero-bits/raw/master/ERIC.js and save the file to the translators directory of your Zotero data directory (http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data). It should start working again. If thi…
  • Ask and ye shall receive. Please go to http://github.com/ajlyon/zotero-bits/raw/master/ERIC.js and save the file to the translators directory of your Zotero data directory (http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data). It should start working again.…
  • I'll see what I can do.
  • I'm not very familiar with the guts of the CSL parser, new or old. I just now took a look at the current implementation (in 2.0), and I don't see any obvious reason why this should be happening. But the disambiguation code is pretty hairy.
  • Also note that you can already start working with the new CSL processor in the trunk XPI builds of Zotero, just be sure to not use it with vital data.
