I've now found that the option to install the OpenOffice plug-in manually does work, so it looks to be an issue with the automatic installation.

I've also lost the Zotero toolbar on upgrading to v2.1. I'm using OpenOffice 3.1.1 on Windows XP with Firefox 3.6.16.
