Spoke too soon. Now, it hangs when it goes to scan a document. I was patient and waited far longer than I normally do, so I'm pretty sure it is stuck.

To LiborA, the format style is "Vancouver". The modification is that the references are numbered superscripts ¹ , where Vancouver has numbers in parentheses (1).
