I mean the center pane within Zotero that lists the titles of the books and papers.

Okay, thanks, I get it now.

Hi dstillman, Thanks again for your answers. I will look into writing different AppleScripts for different profiles so that I can launch the individual libraries with one click. But I assume that I would still need to close an instance of Zotero ru…

Hi adamsmith and dstillman, Thanks for your answers. dstillman, I looked at the pages that describe running multiple instances of Zotero and multiple profiles: https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/multiple_instances https://www.zotero.org/support/k…

Hi adamsmith, Thanks for the information. By the way, you were all correct to say that installing old versions of Zotero or a virgin 5.0.45 version wouldn't get rid of the two-profiles problem. I tried both of those things as well as a TimeMachine…

dstillman, What do you mean when you say "when you save items it connects to the open web?" I do not use any browser connectors to store books or papers. I add every book and paper by hand, usually when I am not connected to the internet. I hope yo…
-
fbennett, Thanks for your help. There may not be a connection between the 5.0.45 version of Zotero and my profile problems, but there is definitely a connection between the instance of 5.0.45 installed on my computer right now and my profiles prob…

dstillman, Thanks for your response and especially thanks for all your work on Zotero. I love it and I have invested hundreds of hours building libraries for books and papers. My book library has over 600 PDF books and is pushing 30GB. I have hundr…

bwiernik, adamsmith's instructions involve fooling around with profiles and deleting folders. I do not want to take ANY chances with my home folder. I want a do-over. I think that if my plan wouldn't work, one of you would have said why it won't …

bwiernik and dstillman, When a program works fine for me, I do not like to take a chance that an upgrade will not. I've been burned in the past on this issue with other software and prefer stability to adventure. to all, Thanks for your attention…

fbennett, Thanks for those ideas, but I like the profiles option. I just want to start over and do the profiles right.
-
My assumption is that the Zotero data directory is a self-contained entity that is not inextricably connected to any particular instance of Zotero and that it does not contain any profile information. If I'm correct, then I hope that by reinstalling…
-
fbennett, I have opened both profiles and the data directory path is the same in both cases. I don't want to delete the new profile because when I start to do so, Zotero says that it will delete the whole folder and I do not want to delete my home …

The only command I ever ran from Terminal was: /Applications/Zotero.app/Contents/MacOS/zotero -P When I ran that command, Zotero started up and presented me with a dialog box that asked me to choose a folder for the new profile. I assume that whe…

Hi fbennett, Thanks for your response. To create the test profile I typed the following into Terminal: /Applications/Zotero.app/Contents/MacOS/zotero -P Then I just followed whatever the instructions were. I don't remember exactly what I did. I …

I want to do the deletion and reinstallation because I do not know how Zotero maintains profile information. I suspect that the profile information is not maintained in the Zotero data directory (ie. the folder named Zotero containing the following …

Because I don't think it's connected to the profile problem. Also, I don't like having software installed on my computer without my knowledge.
-
Thanks for the idea, bwiernik, but I think the profiles route is going to work for me if I can avoid deleting my home directory. adamsmith, I have unchecked that box and now the profile manager does appear when I start up from the dock. I think …

Hi adamsmith, Thanks for your help! 1. When I start up Zotero by clicking on its icon in the Dock, I am not presented with the profile manager. But when I start up using the command line, I do get the manager. Is the command line the only way to g…

Hi adamsmith, Thanks for your response. I followed your instructions and created a new Zotero profile and stored it in my main user folder along with my current Zotero data directory. My main user folder now has a dozen or so new Zotero files. S…

Hi bwiernik, Thanks for your response. When I try to create a new group using my stand-alone Zotero, it sends me online to log into Zotero. I do not want my libraries to be online, I want them to be entirely self-contained on my computer. I have…

The secondary sort was by "creator," which I assume is the author in the case of a book. But then I selected "title" as the secondary sort and now the volumes are sorted correctly. Thanks very much for your help!
-
Also, when I do sort by title, the Poe works are sorted correctly.
-
I am not sorting by title, I'm sorting by call number. In this case the call numbers are all the same ("810 Poe"). But I have other multi-volume works that have the same call number, but which sort correctly.
-
Hi bwiernik, Everything is in the title field.

I've found the Preferences panel for the on-disk Zotero and I now can sync. Thanks for your help.
-
Thanks for the link. I think I see how the syncing works, but when I log in to Zotero, there is no "Preferences" or "Sync" tab. There are only the following menu choices: Home, My Library, Groups, People, Documentation, Forums, Get Involved. None of…
