What style are you using? I just created a bib with the "Create Bibliography From Selected Items" function using Chicago and it worked just fine. If I can duplicate the issue I would be more than happy to write up a ticket.

There could be an issue with your macro security. Try turning your macro security down and see if this helps resolve the issue.

When we move to Zotero 1.5 with Firefox 3 there should be a dramatic shift in speed in Zotero. The improvements in Zotero, alongside the fixed memory issues in Firefox may well clear this up.
