... "in press" is obviously a valid status that is distinct from "forthcoming." Parenthetically: I do not think "in press" is misused any more than "forthcoming" is. Just to clarify what I meant: "in press" literally means "is at the printers"; eith…

Yes, status is not anything to do with type (though admittedly there is some blurry area where people sometimes describe a manuscript as "unpublished manuscript" or some such). I'd really like to consider this use case very narrowly as related only …

Why should "in press" be allowed? Please don't tell me "because that's what a lot of people use" because a) in many cases that term is used incorrectly, and b) "forthcoming" is inclusive of "in press" (e.g. to use "forthcoming" for an in-press arti…

@noksagt: I don't have a link (it's on the xbib archive somewhere), but the decision is based on the fact that I introduced that behavior before we had the conditional flow control support, which makes it unnecessary. Not only is it unnecessary, but…

Am not saying don't use types; am saying don't privilege them. When people start with the types, they end up with more problems, I submit, than if they start without them. In the case of a report number, it's highly unlikely the formatting is going …
-
As I said, forget about the types unless formatting is obviously wrong.
-
This default behavior is going away in the future though. General rule: don't base formatting on types if you can avoid it.

@Rintze: that example is XSLT 2.0 (can't be done in 1.0), and is really complex.

I'm a little unsure of the exact meaning of "part of CSL". The question is, which software agent is responsible for abbreviation. It's feasible that the CSL processor passes the client app the abbreviation URI, and that app ships pre-abbreviated da…

I'm in support of being able to specify in the style which abbreviation list should be used. I think that implies that abbreviation is closely connected to CSL, Not necessarily. ... but I don't see any reason why the lists couldn't be stored in JSON…

Grumble, grumble, grumble. What are these editors thinking???!!! Elena once suggested I send an editorial on the insanity of citation styling to something like the Chronicle of Higher Ed. I think that's moving up my priority list.

On the format, it doesn't necessarily follow that we should do what other programs use. If we consider abbreviation part of CSL (and I'm not convinced we do), then the format should probably be XML, given that CSL is an XML format. If we conside…

Chicago recommends only using "forthcoming" as the more inclusive term. Strictly speaking, there's no value to using "in press," since for all practical purposes it is a "forthcoming" release with a set publication date (since it's one that already …

Being able to specify a URI to a list of abbreviations to use & having a common file format for such a list seems very simple to put in the specification. But not as simple as putting nothing in at all (in CSL 1.0). Assembling those lists and, t…

Just b/c you submit something doesn't means it will be forthcoming. I ask because I'm not interested in leaving this open-ended free text. They're going to be controlled values.

What a PITA! So for sake of argument, why should this be a matter for the CSL processor at all, except for the fact that it might be nice (though not essential) to be able to specify the list in the style? Seems that clients like Zotero could do th…

Two things: 1) a list of 10,000 items is insane. Why not just specify abbreviation algorithms as described in that illinois link ("List of Title Word Abbreviations")? 2) I don't see any great advantage using JSON here; the XML might be as simple a…

You all are using passive voice ("is installed" etc.). What agent is doing this work (downloading)? How?
-
My first hunch is that it might be best to leave this out of CSL ATM. I do very much like the idea of using a URI to specify the abbreviation list, but there's some extra work that would be needed to take advantage of this, and I'm not sure we have …

What's the value of any distinction between "in press" and "forthcoming"? Can we treat those as synonymous?
-
I think Zotero needs something like a "user data" tab, and to have a "label" field there. This could store the bibtex key. Would also help to move other similar fields over there.

genre - mapped to... - this is mapped (among others) to Artwork Size. It would be great if it could also be mapped to the (unmapped) Scale for Maps - it's not 100% intutitive, but makes some sense. No; this isn't appropriate. That variable is effect…

Sigh ... please spend some time reading the documentation before wasting people's time like this. http://www.zotero.org/support/

This might be relevant on copy-pasting.

On the RDF, I presume you're opening the file in Firefox directly (not importing through Zotero), and it's just saying it doesn't know how to display the content. That's no bug.

You're thinking too much like a TeX user, and as a consequence missing some important details. First, the notes are not "rich text" in the traditional sense. They are structured HTML; every bit as structured as, say, LaTeX. This makes it easy to co…

On your #1 point, I couldn't disagree more strongly.

It'd still be better IMHO if zotero put out standardized rss, .. Not at all. They export Atom, which is every bit as standard (arguably more so) than RSS. OTOH, if they supported RSS 1.0, they'd also have RDF.

I'll also reference this thought of mine.

I have no problem adding it; just did. I was just explaining why I'm uncomfortable adding the entire list. Might have something to do with the fact that it makes a common mistake, which is categorizing my discipline as only a science ;-)
