Ah, that's great.

Happy to do that. Which ones appear less obvious? Generally speaking, these options would allow for powerful fine-tuning of renaming and consistency with a user's existing approach. For instance, for items with no creators, the filename can lead wit…

Zotero obviously does create folders when saving stored attachments — just not any that users have direct control over. They have randomized eight-character folder names for every attachment. If you have 4,000 attachments, every computer you use has…

Spent some time toying with the file renaming feature and developed this wish list. Add regex find-and-replace parameter for all variables. Add firstCollection variable, ideally returning the first and topmost collection name of the parent item. …

Understood. I was referring to linked attachments, not Zotero-stored ones. Zotfile allows two kinds of "renaming": one template for the filename itself, another for the subfolder where you want the linked attachment to land (outside Zotero storage)…

Call me crazy but being able to combine conditionals with "/" or "\" in a suffix parameter would be nice. Currently in the new renaming system slashes appear to be disallowed.
-
Just curious — will the renaming features in Zotero 7 be as robust as Zotfile's? For example, Zotfile allows regex changes to particular fields. You can also specify subfolders based on various criteria (collection, type, creator, etc.).

I don't use the online library for storage, because of the space limitations of Zotero's (free) usage. But I assume if you are syncing then, yes, any changes you make locally will affect your online library. I find it more convenient to use relativ…

Well, in the meantime, I'll offer a hack. [NB: This is for anyone interested in converting multi-file webpages (or otherwise isolating only snapshots for deletion even if you've changed their names and so on). It will only be meaningful to you if,…

Science2002's question from 2014 is on my mind. For those of us using Zotfile to manage file storage outside the default Zotero storage folders, having thumbnail icons for linked attachments would be a big plus. Currently, all linked attachments ap…

Dan's advance search also captures single-file HTMLs. What if I only wanted to capture Zotero-produced snapshots in my search, including those I have renamed such that the word "snaptshot" is not in their title? At some deep level, Zotero knows the…

I'll just go ahead and update this. I managed to use a SQLite editor to manually replace filename extensions and type information in the itemAttachments table of the database. I used the UPDATE and REPLACE commands together to change both the 'path'…

The Podcast type is meaningful and distinct. And -- at least in my beta 5.0 version of Zotero -- it still needs updating. An "audio recording" could very well be unpublished raw material sitting in an archive or in a drawer, on tape or vinyl or som…

Thanks for these replies, especially the link on batch processing. One reason I think these suggested features are complementary -- but distinct and equally powerful -- is that unless you already have an existing batch of identifiers to process, you…

If I may, the ticket for this enhancement looks like it was opened four years ago and last modified two years ago, but not yet resolved. If I'm missing something, my apologies. If not, seems like a long time to wait for an improvement that should be…

thanks. here you go: D1977523142 for the record, when i hit "verify server" from the sync tab in preferences it successfully connects.

does anyone have anything further to say about this? i get the same error but as far as i can tell my attachments (via a non-zotero webdav) are syncing fine. here's the report number: 1640132479.

Was anyone planning on addressing this? I have found that, even when the file is not open, the rename feature is buggy: files may get renamed in fact, while the new name often does not appear in the center pane. Expanding and unexpanding the entry h…

Thanks. I could swear that I checked the task manager and killed Firefox processes in response to this problem, to little avail. But I'll keep that point in mind.

Good suggestions, but I had already tried them. In fact, your hunch that the problem comes and goes is correct. Sometimes (but not always) restarting the whole system makes it go away. But it happens often enough to drive me batty.
-
A good point there. One would think that a simple contract with the user (of the accept/decline variety) would do the trick: "By using Webdav file syncing with group libraries you agree not to violate copyright laws and are held solely liable in the…

Excellent discussion. Might be useful to add that or something like it to the wiki, maybe on a page like "more details about syncing" or something. Many thanks.

Thanks again, and good advice. For the record, I had already upgraded to b6.2 at work, then synced by "restore to server" before going home and encountering the problem. So I'm still not convinced it has (solely) to do with a bug (solely) in the old…

But we've already agreed it will happen! -- from Michael's perspective. (And let's be clear -- I'm using him figuratively here, I don't know him or anything about him.) Once the option to move-but-not copy is there, users who want to operate primari…

Thanks for the helpful comments. I have good news to report. A merge sync at work seems to have fixed the problem. My notes are back where they should be, and the changes I made at home were entirely preserved. Phew. Here's the weird thing: Upon syn…

Well, thank you, I guess. If the ticket is filled, then Michael and many others will be able to use Zotero in exactly the way he's describing. One may think this use is contrary to the program's "fundamental design" but that's hardly relevant. If it…

He is and his isn't. In fact, the bit Stillman just quoted demonstrates precisely that Michael is referring to different collections and NOT the entire library. It's just that he's thinking about collections in a different way, i.e., as "folders." Y…

Adam: I happen to be a "younger academic" but that's beside the point. Clearly we agree the option to move-but-not-copy needs to be there, while the debate over the better default could be made irrelevant with an appropriate user preference. B…

Just to follow up briefly. I don't think Dan understood Michael's point. My guess is Michael is not actually referring to his entire library, but rather a collection which houses all unsorted (downloaded, imported, etc.) references that he in his sp…

But this is Zotero, not iTunes, and I suspect it caters to a different mindset (one, perhaps, that privileges organization over clutter?). Anyway, my vote is for strictly moving between collections as the default, and copying between collections as …
