Since I updated to Zotero 7 and the 64-bit version, this problem has gone away. Thanks both for your assistance.

@dstillmann, thank you! I am not sure why my version was behind as it is set to auto-update. I updated to v7 and then to the 64-bit version, and the problem now seems to have gone away. Thanks very much for your help.
