No. Child notes have always existed, but their relationship to the parent item is very different than a chapter to a book (or similar hierarchical item relationships)

How did you install Zotero? The sandbox error sounds like it might be the Flatpack? If so, that's not officially supported and the advice would be to use one of the ways of installing the linux version: https://www.zotero.org/support/installation
