The linked thread got resolved exactly as described here. You can try switching to a different style and back to make sure all citations are refreshed. Do you see the a in your bibliography, too?

That really should work as long as everyone has "sync full text content" enabled in the sync preferences. I don't have an explanation of why it wouldn't.

You can uncheck "Sync attachments files in My Library using"... and check it for group libraries. As long as group libraries have files enabled (which they don't have to), you cannot select individual group libraries to sync.

No, you can still.get the PDFs if you get the metadata through an aggregator, but if access to the PDF at your institution isn't through the publisher but, say, through EBSCO, Zotero won't find it

That behavior is standard Chicago style and correct as you show it. If you want the same number for the same citation, you want a numeric style -- that's e.g. Nature, IEEE, or Vancouver among those pre-installed or many hundred on zotero.org/styles
