Took me a while to work it out, but it turns out this is an issue with Date and Time on OSX Lion - nothing to do with Zotero. See https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3820626?start=0&tstart=0. The suggestion from Linc Davis worked for me.

I should add that I checked database integrity using the Zotero tool - no problems surfaced.
