Actually I completely lost the Zutilo contextual menu. I reverted back to the last "official" release (https://www.zotero.org/download/), and Zutilo menu re-appeared.

Another wish: Searchable Word documents. https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/68875/running-a-search-on-microsoft-word-or-rtf-linked-documents/p1

@dstillman "As for making annotations searchable, the third-party ZotFile plugin can extract your annotations to notes in Zotero, where they become searchable. We're planning to integrate similar functionality into Zotero in a future version." Tru…

@dstillman Thank you! That did the trick. I wonder if allowing a different key combination (or a preference that would require no key combination for this behavior) would make it work more smoothly, without requiring that pause until Zotero, shy…

Anyone have further thoughts on how to resolve this issue? Anyone else experience this problem? Thank you....

I posted the video of the problem in that thread.

Years later, trying this again, still having this problem. Now in a very different version of the OS (High Sierra, 10.13.6). I disabled and uninstalled plugins (Zotfile etc.) so those are not the issue. Here's a video showing the behavior. The d…

Ah, now I remember that keyboard shortcut, which never worked properly on my system. Trying it now in a very different version of the OS (High Sierra), and the problem recurs. No matter how I handle the Command-Option-Drag, Zotero copies the file …

Thank you for the modifier-key answer! Sorry that I missed that in the docs. Found it here now: "By default, files dragged into Zotero are added as copies of the original files. To instead add links to the original files, hold down Ctrl+Shift (Wind…

P.S. Since there is no real hierarchy limit, I tested organizing multiple libraries by my preferred method (LIBRARY folders within subject area subfolders), and it seems to work. I set Zotero's base directory to my general documents directory, whi…

Thank you for the explanation of the benefits of the internal database. I will consider those carefully as I go forward. Meanwhile, is there a way to change the behavior of Zotero when dragging PDFs into its interface, such that this creates a lin…

As I thought/feared. So choice of a reference manager is quite a commitment then! A bit of a marriage, it seems. (This matters to me not just because of works in progress, such as my never-ending dissertation, but because I also keep documents on t…

Thank you again for the quick reply. So is there no way to convert, say, Mendeley citations to Zotero citations (or vice versa) so that the resulting document has only the single type?

Dear Mr. Smith, Thank you for the impossibly fast response! Glad to know. Is there a FAQ/summary of the detailed pros (and cons) of using the internal database? An additional concern I have is that if I ever move from Zotero to some other manager …

Is there a way to link to the iBooks files purchased via iBooks Store? Those files sadly are not named helpfully, but only carry a series of numbers as their names (e.g. 1090648908.epub). Attempting to add links to these files within Zotero has b…

Thank you for the prompt and helpful responses.

I created a new "Test" user account, and the problem persists. I even re-booted into Safe Mode (http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262), which should disable any third-party extensions. There is nothing in the Log-in items or Start-up items folders…

Any idea what other software might conflict with this? I know that Command-Option-Click is the shortcut on the Mac to go to an app and hide all the other apps. Perhaps this interferes; not sure whether it can be disabled.

I am dragging it into the middle pane area of Zotero Desktop. I believe I am performing the action correctly, as it does work on my very old MacBook (2006 model) with an old Operating System (probably Lion; would have to check). So I suspect t…

Dear Mr. Stillman: Thank you for the response. Yes, there is the curved black arrow when dragging.

Thank you again...I tried your suggestion of disabling add-ons (I am surprised to see various add-ons listed that seem to have nothing to do with Zotero, such as Silverlight and Shockwave Flash). I set all of them to "Never Activate", then quite and…

Thank you for the response. I tried Cmd+Opt+drag, with the same result: the file copied instead of linked. I also tried other variations, like Control-Opt-Drag, with the same result.

Hello - I am new to Zotero, and attempting to add Links rather than copies of local PDF files on my hard drive. If I understood correctly, Control-Shift dragging files into Zotero's window should produce this result. However, in every case, the re…

Mac copy drag does not work at all. Tried Control-Shift-Drag and all other command key variations. Please advise.
