It works flawlessly for the new (test) reference, but not for the old ones. The footnotes into endnotes must have messed up the formatting somewhere.

My bad, it's author-date into MHRA referencing. The endnotes could be it. Do you think converting the endnotes into footnotes before changing preferences will fix it? (on a quick try, it doesn't seem to work)

It's not a safari specific issue only though: formosaman reports exactly the same issue for Chrome above on Jan 10th 2015.
