AFAIK, WebDAV sync still uses .zip/.prop files. However, you can search the forums for threads re. plans for storing uncompressed copies on a server & other requests to make the link to these viewable on the Zotero server.

As the database changes with each new release I take it that you can't go back to the previous version by downgrading.Correct. It is prudent to make a backup before upgrading, so that you can revert to where you were.
