• Success! I restored from the zotero server. It gave me 415 conflicts which I resolved (interesting that this time the local and remote panes had a "choose this" button at the bottom). It has synched. Thanks!

• Yes, I'm pretty sure they were real conflicts. E.g. sometime a duplicate record had been deleted - that's the "remote" version that I chose.
