Thanks for the ODT solution. When I convert the docx to ODT a lot of things break and like Adam says, it's a bit clumsy switching back and forth. For a completely new paper I might start in ODT but for my thesis I might just have to work around…

I split the doc into half, half again, half again etc. then found an area where the citation seems to be. Do I reveal codes then look for something specific here, replace the codes in this section or keep splitting down?

Yeah, Bostjan, I have Endnote Desktop which I don't use because it's rubbish! It was useful to convert Word refs to RIS then import into Zotero!

Seems like this was a problem with the AMR CSL file. I changed it back to AMR on my other computer and the problem returned. I will stick to the standard CSL styles for now.

Thanks, I think it may have been the caption issue as it seems to be working ok now. I pasted the content into a new doc and removed the captions and it seems OK now -thank you! I'm happy to donate the buggy copy to any devs if they want them
