Just to illustrate my point, this is Zotero "at rest" with a couple of open books. https://s3.amazonaws.com/zotero.org/images/forums/u13653181/tutc9fqhxqet759b0aib.png

@abodywithoutorgans: I suggest that you also look at real/private/shared/compressed memory columns. The main number may be somewhat misleading, a large part of that memory could have been swapped out or compressed, and a significant part is probably…

@dstillman: an update based on a closer examination I've been carrying out. 1. Contrary to Chromium-based apps, whose memory usage tends to spread across many processes, most of them not windowed ones, Zotero memory is mainly concentrated in one pr…

@dstillman: ok, then. I don't use Firefox but have been testing this a bit with Chrome reader (not based on pdf.js I suppose), and although leaner it still takes 300-400 MB to load the first book, so in this regard it's not that different. One diffe…

I'm having the same experience in my MBP M1 2020 running the latest Z7 beta. It starts using around 600-800 MB, opening a couple of pdf books puts it well into the 1.5-2 GB range. By comparison, opening the same books in Preview uses about 200 MB. I…

I see, it makes sense. For LaTeX I'm going to export the entire file each time something gets updated then, it's not that bad. And for more informal references from my external notes I'll just set quick copy to Chicago style or similar. Thanks again!

Thanks for the clarifications! It's clearer now. > a citation style called "BibTeX" ... You should not use it with Zotero Why? I found it to be the more convenient option to copy&paste BibTeX without installing additional plugins. The quick…

> Why are there two different lists of styles, a fixed one for quick copy and an extendable one to create bibliographies? And, for example, why is BibTeX included in one by default but not in the other one? I was able to answer this one myself. …

I've starred the discussion a few weeks ago and still got no notifications for later comments. Sorry for going OT but it's a heads up.

By the way, just a detail but that toolbar is somewhat off-centered (or somewhat differently anchored) for epubs, it looks more polished for pdfs, this is noticeable in Odd Spreads mode: https://s3.amazonaws.com/zotero.org/images/forums/u13653181/a…

> Because that would further conflate the two different modes of annotating I see your point and have thought about it but still think that the usage pattern is clear and intuitive enough (after all, it's what Preview has done for years in macOS…

This is an idea based on a frequent confusion of mine: when I select some text and then decide I want it underlined, I click on the toolbar button and lose the selection. Why not making the buttons one-shot when there is an active selection? Moreove…

Related to this, in Zotero 7 I can see the right panel button in the toolbar of the new window but it's not functional. Has it been implemented but there is a bug when toggling it or perhaps the button is just a mock for now?

Yep, I didn't know that the library position couldn't be changed. There still is a corner case when you have another Zotero window focused, but mostly yes.

> I don't know if it does what you need, but you're aware of Notero? Yes, it's a fine tool, and since items and notes are imported into Notion you can take advantage of Notion quick search/link abilities. But I don't want to duplicate my notes b…

> What are you using? Mostly Notion. > The main point of the citation dialog is to search for citations. The fact that it lets you add a locator is one minor feature of the dialog. I agree with this, but I saw the ability to quickly search …

Ok, I was expecting something like that to be the reason for 1 vs 2/3, it makes sense. Thanks for looking at the page thing.

> either we highlight it as text, appearing weirdly formatted, or annotate as image, This either-or kind of surprises me. Being able to jump to the formula in its original context is arguably the most important feature and it's already implement…

There are a number of comments here regarding margin size. I would like to present the problem from another perspective: line width. Lines that are too narrow make text difficult to read and so do lines that are too wide. It is often said that a par…

I kept observing the background behavior of Zotero. Eventually it recedes a bit but one thing is notorious: it's the only background app which %GPU doesn't eventually goes down to 0, instead Zotero stays at 0.1% all the time (except for some very i…

Hi, macOS Sonoma MBP M1 2020 here, testing Zotero 7 with auto-sync disabled, an empty library with just one small pdf attached and open, I keep Activity Monitor in a separate desktop so that Zotero is not visible, CPU always in the range 2%-%5, GPU …

Amazing job. I mean everything: the new l&f, the new icon, the dark mode, the new features. Perhaps light/dark/system mode entries could be added to the View menu in order to simplify switching.
