@dstillman: I've installed the beta version, and yes, it significantly speeds up the process, even if it remains slower than Zotero 7's, but not by much. Please let me know if you need anything for future investigation.

I've run the beta version several times and am fairly sure it doesn't speed up the process on my PC. For your further investigation, I've submitted my debug output: D7464038.

I've now downgraded to Zotero 7, and it starts in less than 5 seconds. My issue appears to depend on the version I installed and, perhaps, also on the number of annotations and files.
