I had a similar issue (with a different reference format), and solved it by removing the "Number" entry in the Extra box in Zotero.

Yes, that seems likely. Thanks! I enter names as they are published for each article, which can lead to an author being inconsistently named. Making names consistent in my library, as the linked page suggests, would produce incorrect citations.

@dstillman, Zotero just auto-updated again on my computer and the Word plugin stopped working. My university was going to report the issue to Crowdstrike, but has not told me what they heard back.
