• Just had this same problem. We solved it by importing the DOCX into a Google Doc, and doing the bibliography work with Zotero as a Google Doc. Then export as a DOCX.

• Thanks for the suggestion. Essentially it appears that Zotero couldn't make a connection to a Word doc in Google Drive, but once we imported the document into Google Docs, everything was fine. I misstated what we had done in the original post.
