You can configure how/if the Zotero icon appears in the add-on bar in your Zotero preferences (Gear menu -> Preferences -> General) You can also add a Zotero button to your toolbar by customizing that in the usual way in Firefox.

As a temporary fix an admin can now see the applications even after the group is changed to open membership. In the near future it will change to automatically accept pending applications when the group changes to open membership.
