EBSCO host translators not working

• ed.podesta: Can you submit an error report for a failed save attempt? Go to report errors in the gear menu, and post the report ID here. You can post the error text here as well, if you'd like.
• Dear Avram,

I have deleted all the proxies schemes and tested the same ANs again. There has been no change in the results:

1. if there is a pdf, it is downloaded properly as "EBSCO Full Text",

2. even if there is no pdf, an attachment is still downloaded as "EBSCO Full Text", which shows "Sorry, we are unable to retrieve the document you requested." message when having been clicked on,

3. if there is English set as primary language in EBSCOhost settings, no snapshot is downloaded as "EBSCO Record", only a link, which is usable when having been manually tweaked by adding the proxy name (and the "&scope=site" suffix in case one wants to have clickable record entries - such as the publication name, author, and so on - in the opened page)

4. if there is Czech set as primary language in EBSCOhost settings, again, no snapshot is downloaded as "EBSCO Record", only a link, which is, in addition, unusable as having been describe above (or, in case the "&scope=site" suffix is added, there is a basic search page opened with "AN 4370815⟨=cs" filled in the search box, along with "No results were found." message below - which is logical, as the syntax of the query is not correct, at least according to what I have managed to learn so far).
Regards
JR
• Hi there,

I sent an error report - the text was

[JavaScript Error: "TypeError: doc.evaluate("//input[@id ='pLink']/@value", doc, nsResolver, XPathResult.ANY_TYPE, null).iterateNext() is null" {file: "file:///Users/ed/Library/Application%20Support/Firefox/Profiles/qpeut6uu.default/zotero/translators/EBSCOhost.js" line: 0}]

thanks!

Ed.
• ed - ajlyon will need a permanent link or a replicable search path (i.e. how to get to the item from the EBSCO seach screen) to see why that error occurs.
• Right - If I just use the path in my browser I don't think that this will work - as I'm working through the OU's proxy.

I searched for 'nationalism nation state' - the first link was to a journal article entitled 'Civic-secular and ethnic nationalisms as bases of the nation-state: multiculturalism at the crossroads?'.

If I click on it and then try to click on the save to zotero item in the left next to the URL I get the error in the red box.

I hope that's what you wanted!

Ed.
• Jan: (2) seems to indicate that EBSCOhost is sending incorrect header information-- Zotero is clearly looking for something of type "application/pdf", and if the file is being saved, that seems to mean that EBSCO is serving it incorrectly. I'll explore further.

(3) is intentional-- I'm adding a permanent link, and it shouldn't contain the proxy information, since it's there to give you an easy way to access the document from any computer, anywhere. If your proxy settings in Zotero were set up correctly, then Zotero would automatically proxy the request for even a URL in this form. Once we figure out the EBSCO and ProQuest issues, we'll see about getting your proxy set up (I seem to remember trying to set up the Charles University proxy when I was living na Kajetánce-- it should be possible). I'll add scope=site to the link if it gives a nicer page.

As for (4), it sounds like the URL info is a little different for Czech users. I'll switch EBSCO to Czech and see what I can figure out.
• Ed: You'll need to update to the latest EBSCO translator first: go to http://github.com/ajlyon/translators/raw/master/EBSCOhost.js and save the file to the translators directory of your Zotero data directory (http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data).

If you still have trouble, post again with a new error report.
• (4) is fixed now on Github. Reinstall from there to fix the permalinks.
• For issue (2), I'm having trouble finding a file that's doesn't give me a PDF attachment (UCLA apparently subscribes to lots of full-text databases through EBSCO). Can you provide a debug ID (http://www.zotero.org/support/debug_output) for an attempt to save a PDF that shows this behavior?
• edited August 5, 2011
Thanks for your help.

Using the same search above, and with the new translator from github, I get a blank red box, no note of failure, nothing saved to zotero and there's no error in the log.

couldn't find an entry in the report errors log, but I turned logging on in preferences, and got some stuff that might help - I can't post it here as it's too long... but reading above I worked out that I need to give you D1289122811 as the debug ID :)
• Wow! This translator is a huge improvement!

Automatic PDF download! Woohoo!

However, I'm still having issues with double dates... It's improved to quasi-double dates. Things like "Ap," "Sum," "O" etc. appear before the date. The year is no longer double.

Also, clicking the envelope for multiple items produces and error: Report ID: 694785361. (I didn't see this address above, but I might have missed it)

All in all, a massive improvement! Kudos to all involved!

Dan: Can you post the relevant portion of Ed's debug output?

arggem: Can you just post the error text (from Report Errors) here on the forum? It'll be faster than waiting for Dan to retrieve it from the logs. As for the dates, can you post the correct dates and what you're getting, and preferably the accession number as well (should be something like AN 4370815 -- in the URL or in the citation info on the page)? This should be doable, although it looks like some of the dates are seasons (Sum[mer]).

And I'm glad to hear that this is working for you. It's actually changed my EBSCO experience enough that I've starting using the database myself-- I used to avoid it, mainly because I hate downloading PDFs manually.

Many post-colonial countries, particularly those that went through national liberation struggles, like India and China, with multi-ethnic mobilisations, established sovereign states. The nationalist leaders claimed the unity of nationhood for their culturally diverse countries (states), with their millennia-deep civilisational identity, compelling a new discourse on the untenability of the classic Eurocentric paradigm. The second development witnessed the inevitable cultural heterogenisation of the western countries premised on the expansion of the (immigrant) labour market through an ever-enveloping regime of economic liberalisation and world trade. The catharsis of the invasion of cheaper labour from culturally diverse countries, often native-displacing, resulted in western countries attempting to accommodate the emerging changing reality in the context of mono-cultural nations through the concept and policy of multiculturalism. In spite of this, western countries have been witness to intercultural violence, racial discrimination and threats of home grown terrorism. The paper seeks to distinguish between 'pluralism' and 'multiculturalism' and argues for a reformulation of the concept of the nation-state that will have greater applicability across states. I see that Dan has posted the error.

• I've fixed the multiple item saving issues, I believe. Ed's issue was because I wasn't being too careful with my asynchronous requests (this has a lot of them-- so it runs rather slowly), and Zotero was prematurely deciding that the translation had completed (without saving anything). arggem's was simply an error in the code. Please go to http://github.com/ajlyon/translators/raw/master/EBSCOhost.js and save the file to the translators directory of your Zotero data directory (http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data).

The dates are what I suspected -- I'll try to fall back on the dates like "Sum 1979" instead of the apparently more accurate "June 1, 1979", since we can be pretty confident that the latter is just EBSCO's way of recording the season, and not a precise date of publication. More to come on the date issue.
• Almost!!

On multiple items, it seems to save only the PDF associated with the first item in the list, regardless if it is selected for download or not. That same PDF is downloaded and attached to all items selected.

ohhh, soooo close!!!

[Note: This is for the date issue. I'll try the PDFs again.]
Try installing again:
Please go to http://github.com/ajlyon/translators/raw/master/EBSCOhost.js and save the file to the translators directory of your Zotero data directory (http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data).

It should start working again. If this works for you, please post here so that I can submit this change to be pushed to all users.
• No longer a 'silent' fail - I get the translator error message in the red box.

Report an Error under preferences gives:

[JavaScript Error: "[Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x804b000a (NS_ERROR_MALFORMED_URI) [nsIIOService.newURI]" nsresult: "0x804b000a (NS_ERROR_MALFORMED_URI)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/proxy.js :: <TOP_LEVEL> :: line 316" data: no]" {file: "file:///Users/ed/Library/Application%20Support/Firefox/Profiles/qpeut6uu.default/zotero/translators/EBSCOhost.js" line: 0}]

which looks relevant. Should I post the log too?

thanks for your efforts by the way - it is really appreciated.

• arggem: The PDF issue seems to be fixed now. Reinstall from Github. I'm having trouble working on the date issue, since I don't have access to the items you're using. Try to save them and provide debug output for the attempt, posting the debug ID here or posting the relevant bits of the debug text. I'm looking for the RIS record you're getting from EBSCO.
• Ed: That's an error that's being triggered somewhere deeper, in Zotero's proxy system. I think it has to do with the fragment marker (#) in the address-- try reinstalling and saving again.

Please go to http://github.com/ajlyon/translators/raw/master/EBSCOhost.js and save the file to the translators directory of your Zotero data directory (http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data).
• Multiple items is completely broken this time. Sometimes I get a "could not save" error and sometimes it's a silent fail.

Here is the error message.
[JavaScript Error: "TypeError: an is null" {file: "file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/User Name/Application%20Data/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/dqtrm6on.default/zotero/translators/EBSCOhost.js" line: 0}]

Also, saving individual items is now failing silently.

I can post the whole debugging log, but I noticed that the year is coded:

Y1 - 1975/10/01/O 1975
Y1 - 1979/06/01/Sum 1979

Do you need anything else?

Thanks for your help on this!!!!
• Reinstall from Github again. The "an" thing was an oversight-- sorry. The dates should work now too, but I can't test them easily, since I don't have any records to test on. Let me know how the new version works for you.
• Individual items now save again. Dates look great!!

Multiple items again retrieves meta data correctly (including dates)

However, again, it only downloads the first PDF in the list, regardless of it being selected or not. It downloads the same file for all the items.
• Hiya,

I've uninstalled zotero and firefox and deleted profile / support data from library.

I'm therefore working from a fresh install of both.

I've also downloaded the latest version of the translator as above.

Still getting a failure message - report errors gives me

[JavaScript Error: "[Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x804b000a (NS_ERROR_MALFORMED_URI) [nsIIOService.newURI]" nsresult: "0x804b000a (NS_ERROR_MALFORMED_URI)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/proxy.js :: <TOP_LEVEL> :: line 316" data: no]" {file: "file:///Users/ed/Library/Application%20Support/Firefox/Profiles/ife062iq.default/zotero/translators/EBSCOhost.js" line: 0}]

Any ideas?
• Ed: I need to know the URL triggering this-- it was in the debug output here:url => http://ehis.ebscohost.com/eds/detail?vid=2&hid=116&sid=dda094aa-67d1-4c80-ba0b-bf87139407d8@sessionmgr114&bdata=JnNpdGU9ZWRzLWxpdmUmc2NvcGU9c2l0ZQ==#db=bth&AN=23692263
downloadAssociatedFiles => true
automaticSnapshots => true

Can you post the URL that currently is triggering it, from the debug output? As I said, I'm afraid this is being caused by something deeper-- it shouldn't generally be possible for what I'm doing to cause errors like this. The error, however, is probably not in your Zotero install, but might be a bug or undocumented limitation in Zotero itself. I'm hoping Simon or Dan will drop by and take a look.
• AJ - here's the url from the debug log

url => http://ehis.ebscohost.com/eds/detail?vid=4&hid=121&sid=70c58af4-e01f-4d41-9aa6-0b73e5e4f064@sessionmgr112&bdata=JnNpdGU9ZWRzLWxpdmUmc2NvcGU9c2l0ZQ==#db=bth&AN=23692263

and this is the error log content

[JavaScript Error: "[Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x804b000a (NS_ERROR_MALFORMED_URI) [nsIIOService.newURI]" nsresult: "0x804b000a (NS_ERROR_MALFORMED_URI)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/proxy.js :: <TOP_LEVEL> :: line 316" data: no]" {file: "file:///Users/ed/Library/Application%20Support/Firefox/Profiles/ife062iq.default/zotero/translators/EBSCOhost.js" line: 0}]
• Ok. I've made some more changes to PDF saving, and now it saves the correct PDF for each item, at least in my testing. New version up at GitHub-- reinstall from there as before.

This version also strips out the fragment identifier (#) from all of its URLs, so it might fix your problem as well, Ed. If not, I'm going to punt on the proxy issue and have one of the other devs look at it.
• Thanks AJ - but there's still no joy. Do I have to do anything to get this taken to the other devs, or will they pick this up from the forum?

By the way, it's great that you have worked so hard to help :)
