Proquest translator not recognising their new interface

2
  • Can someone provide details on how to "save" or "Download" the translator provided? I must not be as computer saavy as the rest of you.
  • Go to http://github.com/ajlyon/zotero-bits/raw/master/ProQuest.js and save the file to the translators directory of your Zotero data directory (http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data).

    Then restart Firefox.
  • thanks for the quick reply, but I need a little more detail...sorry! How exactly do I save it?
  • I think this should work by default in the latest version of Zotero (2.1.5).
  • I have the latest version downloaded, but the journal articles in ProQuest do not have the zotero icon. The only way I have figured out how to get the info in is manually...:(
  • Can you provide sample URLs that don't work for you?
  • Here are two
    http://proquest.umi.com.ezproxy.chadronstatelibrary.com/pqdweb?index=1&did=1623128951&SrchMode=1&sid=1&Fmt=6&VInst=PROD&VType=PQD&RQT=309&VName=PQD&TS=1302104913&clientId=4484

    http://proquest.umi.com.ezproxy.chadronstatelibrary.com/pqdweb?index=10&did=1177532&SrchMode=1&sid=3&Fmt=6&VInst=PROD&VType=PQD&RQT=309&VName=PQD&TS=1302114309&clientId=4484

    Is that enough?
  • how about when you look at the Full Text instead of the pdf view (link on the top right)
  • That does work for the top link that has the Full Text available. Thanks. Is there a solution for those that are only PDF like my second link?
  • use the abstract view, manually attach the pdf - unfortunately those embedded pdfs are a translator nightmare if I understand ajlyon correctly.
  • Thank you SO much! Great solution that will help me a lot.
  • So why doesn't this one work?? Neither the full text or abstract bring up zotero icon

    http://proquest.umi.com.ezproxy.chadronstatelibrary.com/pqdlink?index=20&sid=2&srchmode=3&vinst=PROD&fmt=2&startpage=-1&clientid=4484&vname=PQD&RQT=309&did=64273308&scaling=FULL&ts=1302194831&vtype=PQD&aid=1&rqt=309&TS=1302195218&clientId=4484
  • Hey, just a heads-up for anyone still looking for ProQuest solutions. I'm reading newspaper articles and if I have the actual article view pulled up, Zotero doesn't see any biblio information to grab. It's presumably not correctly embedded in the page. If you go to the "citation view" (NOT "Cite This" option!!!!) over by the "PDF view" (and in the case of newspapers, "page map view") you'll get an HTML biblio record that has the Zotero-readable metadata embedded. Then, after grabbing the data, click "back" to view your article again, and save the PDF. Not ideal, but the fastest workaround I've come to.
  • I'll try to get back to working on this when my institution moves to the new version of ProQuest. In the meantime, angwe's solution may be the best one. Sorry for the hassle.
  • Hm... I'm not getting one-click zotero options even from citation view, not on any of the dozens of documents I've viewed yesterday and today. (That said, I just tried milliken's link, and it worked for me.

Here are two links that do not work for me: 1 - 2

I am using the latest versions of both zotero and firefox (which include 2 proquest translators: legacy and 2, though I also added the most recent version of the one linked above, to no avail). None of the dozens of dissertations I have looked up on my own have worked thus far. I'll use arlobee's workaround for now, but would love to see this fixed.

Thanks to all for your help!
  • I had apparently missed one of the URL patterns. This version should work:

Please go to http://github.com/ajlyon/zotero-bits/raw/master/ProQuest 2.js and save the file to the translators directory of your Zotero data directory (http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data).

It should start working again. If this works for you, please post here so that I can submit this change to be pushed to all users.
  • Wow - that was fast! Working like a charm, at least to my tired eyes.
  • This is now in the repository and should go out in the next version of Zotero, if Dan doesn't push it to clients before then.
  • My institution is going to move to to the new Proquest interface. I have added manually the translator recommanded by agilyon to the translators directory to my Zotero. It works to capture a reference. But to capture a list of references the translator ProQuest Legacy.js is broken. Can you help me?

    Thanks in advance
  • I added the new file for ProQuest into the translators directory but I am still having problems with certain types of citations.

  • Thank you Kduncan85. Can you give me the new file for ProQuest? I would like to do some tests.

    Thanks in advance
  • So, is this solution working for everyone? I followed the directions in post 50 above and still can't get the 'save' icons (document, or folder) to appear in my browser when I'm in proquest dissertations.
  • the github URL appears to be dead. could you re-post? thanks.
  • Go to http://github.com/ajlyon/translators/raw/master/ProQuest.js and save the file to the translators directory of your Zotero data directory (http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data).
  • thank you for this info. i saved the file as instructed, restarted, etc., but for some reason there's still no icon in the URL bar, which is what i was hoping for. can you think of anything i might have missed? thanks.
  • Please provide example URLs and databases, as well as browser and Zotero versions.
  • also, if you're on windows, check that the file is actually saved as .js and not as .js.txt - when I was exiled to a windows machine I found it impossible to convince the OS to actually save as .js.
  • zotero 2.1.8 on win XP.

sample URL (u may not have access): http://0-search.proquest.com/pqdt/docview/305005189/1316D196A683924CBA5/2?accountid=12526

win recognizes the .js as a Javascript file type.
  • do you happen to know if the 0- right after http:// is something that your institutional proxy inserts? My suspicion is that that's the problem.
  • actually this is the full URL: http://0-search.proquest.com.arcade.nyarc.org/pqdt/docview/305005189/1316D3A4027FE3D0EB/2?accountid=12526.

have queried sysadmin about the "0-"
